Humanity – Review

Developer and publisher Enhance —founded by Tetsuya Mizuguchi— since his debut he has stood out for synesthesia in his games. Proof of this is in their recent releases for PlayStation 5 from Tetris effect and REZ HD, a game that debuted on the Dreamcast and has had a presence on each of the following generations of consoles. Now, Enhance will release on May 16 Humanity, a game developed by the Japanese studio tha ltd. So in our review or Review of Humanity -a title available for PlayStation 4, PS5 and Steam- we will know if that ltd lives up to the experience that fans of Tetsuya Mizuguchi’s studio are used to receiving.

Accompany, guide, understand and transcend

Humanity Review

The evolution of the human being is the main theme of Humanity and is represented with Buddhist symbolism such as the ‘manji’. Learn more about the use of ‘manji’ and its meaning in the following link. In order to bring humanity to light, we will control a Shiba inu (柴犬) dog through a series of levels that have a certain number of tests and their own requirements to unlock the next level. Each of the tests —which at the beginning serve as a game tutorial— can be approached in simple ways. However, as the game introduces us to the “Goldy”, players will have to rescue them to unlock cosmetic items, sounds, information and some passive abilities such as pausing or speeding up the movement of the characters in the game.

Humanity ReviewHumanity ReviewHumanity Review

The tests can be concluded in a simple way, the game even shows us the solution in video format in each of the story mode tests. However, to collect the “Goldy” we will have to use our imagination and think of the most appropriate solution. It is at this point where Humanity shines, in the creativity that the player has to achieve the objectives. But how do we guide humans in Humanity? In order for humanity to ascend, we will give them orders that our dog will leave on the ground. These can be arrows that indicate where to go, various types of jumps, arrows that divide the flow of people in two directions, the ability for humans to float and we can even arm our people among other actions that we will learn about throughout the game. game.

In Humanity, players must solve the puzzles with some limitations.

Humanity ReviewSome tests ask us to develop our strategy before starting the movement of humans.

Additionally, the last test of each Humanity level will ask us for a certain number of rescued “Goldys” in order to unlock it. The tests of the story mode in Humanity have different peculiarities. In some of these, players will not have all the orders available or will have a limited number of uses for the ones they have. Additionally, each scenario has particularities in the environment such as portals, spaces with water or the “Others”. These are other humans who “love” Goldy as much as we do and once we have to deal with them our humanity – thanks to competition – will begin to evolve.

Humanity ReviewMelee weapons and pistols will be our tools to face the Others.

With each level that we unlock the gameplay and the level of difficulty of the riddles or ‘puzzles’ of Humanity evolve. However, once we complete the 90 tests of the story mode -or sooner if we want- we will be ready to create and complete tests of other players in the online creative mode. This mode, as in games like Super Mario Maker 2takes us by the hand to create scenarios and we will also have a library to add our creations or mark those of other players as favorites.

Humanity has almost infinite content

In addition to the music, the human model and the appearance of our creation, we can choose the environment of our test.

Humanity’s music, without reaching the level of synesthesia that previous Enhance games reach, complies with calming and helping each step to think clearly, providing peace of mind. Added to this, Humanity’s minimalist aesthetic, which resembles the view in REZ HD, helps the player focus on what is most important, which is solving the puzzles. We, for our Humanity review or Review, tested the game on Steam and at the highest settings on graphics we never had any performance issues. Quite an achievement, since sometimes the number of elements on the screen can be overwhelming.

During the time we spent testing the game for this Humanity review/Review, we used both traditional controller and keyboard and mouse. Both types of control work well. However, it all depends on how we use the camera. Since, at all times we will have to be adjusting it to improve the angle of vision and to be able to give the order with the correct direction.

Humanity In Brief

Although Humanity isn’t inventing anything, it does manage to surprise us thanks to the freedom it offers the player to solve each of the ‘puzzles’ or riddles it has for us. Additionally, its online mode means that we always have new challenges or that we can create our own to share with the world. Perhaps, the difficulty of some ‘puzzles’ can be a barrier for some players along with how complex it is to adapt to changing the camera. However, the game itself presents us with tools so that our passage through the tests can be adjusted to our own style of play. Finally, it should be noted that Humanity will be available for PlayStation Plus subscribers from day one. With this in mind, we invite you to take a look at the game developed by tha ltd that has nothing to envy to other of Enhance’s works.

Stray Blade – Review

From the first time we set foot on Boletaria, in the now cult game Demon’s Souls, FromSoftware’s formula used in games like Bloodborne, Dark Souls has caught on. Now it is more and more common, among the players, to ask themselves, what is their favorite ‘soulslike’ among the many that are currently on the market. 2023 is special as it features a lot of ‘soulslike’. Among these 2023 releases are games like Lies of P and other games that are already on the market and have elements of this subgenre such as Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. So in our Stary Blade review, we’ll find out if Point Blank Games has managed to understand the subgenre dominated by FromSoftware.

Stray Blade is also available on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

A simple story to understand

Stray Blade’s story begins in the Acrea Valley. Our character —male or female according to our preference, called Farren West— travels to this place in search of adventure and riches. However, upon reaching the Valley of Acrea he finds himself in a hostile environment. As a result of his first contact, he ends up perishing, only to come back to life, with a strange rock embedded in his chest. This new element, in the body of our hero, makes him tied to this mysterious place. For this reason, our destination will be to explore the Acrea Valley to find out how to get out of the situation that afflicts it.

Boji will make us laugh a few times on our adventure.

During our journey we are accompanied by a curious character named Boji, who will take us by the hand through Acrea and will assist us by reviving us and telling us all the details that cover the world of Stray Blade. So to achieve our goal we will have to face the golden army, which sows the land throughout the Valley of Acrea. This premise is straightforward and works to keep players engaged in the events of Farren and Boji’s adventure through to its conclusion. The game is fully subtitled in Spanish and has a highly polished sound and dubbing section.

‘Parrys’ and colors, the fundamentals of Stray Blade combat

In the forge we can create the necessary equipment to face the golden army.

In a ‘soulslike’, combat is the main axis of the gameplay and in this aspect Stary Blade has a simple proposal, but inclement if we make a mistake or have to duel with more than one enemy at the same time. This is because the fighting system responds to two main actions: the parry to hit back and dodge at the right time. Additionally, before attacking, each enemy lights up in a specific color —red to dodge and blue to execute the parry— which will help us know how we should respond to the enemy’s onslaught. By executing each of these actions properly, players will be rewarded with a slight increase in blood and of course with some experience.

Some enemies will require more than brute force to defeat them.

Additionally, in battles we can use spells, abilities and we can even count on Boji’s help to defeat enemies either by ending his life or draining the resistance bar to attack and do more damage to enemies. Unfortunately, the variety of enemies —and Farren’s movements— is quite limited. Thanks to this, when we’re not facing a boss, the fights become repetitive and monotonous. Added to this, the game has several performance problems and ‘stuttering’, which makes the reaction to the enemy’s blows fail —especially when we face several enemies at the same time.

An interesting artistic proposal, but soulless

Stray Blade has a decent musical section, which stands out in boss battles. Additionally, the game’s art direction is eye-catching —despite the lifelessness of its world— and its graphics resemble those seen in games like darksiders either dauntless. We have previously discussed some stuttering issues during combat, as this also occurs in some of the non-fighting areas of the game. During the time we took to review Stray Blade, we experienced a couple of ‘bugs’. Although these were not so aggressive as to interrupt our session, they did manage to surprise us. Since, the game —despite being exclusive for the current generation of consoles and PC— does not stand out for having polished graphics.

Stray Blade In Summary

Stray Blade is a game with a fun and simple combat system that is balanced with the large amount of year that the enemies do. Its settings have a nice artistic direction, but they are wasted. Since, despite having large areas, the rewards are not and the repetitiveness of their combats force us to go directly for the main objective so as not to fall into boredom. If you’re a fan of the genre, you’ll manage to get hooked on Stray Blade, if you can’t weigh it twice. Fortunately, the price of the game in Colombia, in the Steam store, is attractive enough to have it on the wish list if one day we want to die and relive a good time in the valleys of Acrea.

Deathwish Enforcers – Review

The sixties and seventies were golden decades for police movies and series. To these eras we owe pop culture staples like Mission Impossible, The French Connection, Bullitt, The Avengers, and many more. The influence of Dirty Harry and The Anonymous Avenger is still felt today in film, television and video games. That is why despite the time that has passed since they arrived in the world, there are still tributes and parodies like Deathwish Enforcers, the indie game that we will talk about in this review.

Its characters and concept may be inspired by the world of cinema and television, but the gameplay is directly taken from an arcade classic that we remember very fondly: Sunset Riders. This makes sense because that great Konami game was directly based on the ‘spaghetti westerns’ of the sixties and this new title does exactly the same with another popular genre during the same era.

Did you see that trailer? The developers want to make the inspiration of ‘grindhouse cinema’ very clear. This 2D jumping and shooting game takes nothing seriously and because of that it can make all kinds of references – even if they don’t seem to fit the theme – and bad jokes. That works in your favor on several occasions, but also against you.

The best policemen and vigilantes in the world

Moviegoers won’t be able to hold back a smile when they see the character selection screen. Larry Hardwood, Chuck Bronxman, Diana Bang and Cleopatra Love are clear allusions to Harry Callahan (Clint Eastwood in Dirty Harry), Paul Kersey (Charles Bronson in The Anonymous Avenger), Emma Peel (Diana Rigg in The Avengers) and Cleopatra Love ( Pam Grier in Foxy Brown and Coffy).

They are not the only references to pop culture icons of the last century. The bosses are clear parodies of the porn actor Ron Jeremy and characters from movies like A Clockwork Orange, Diabolik and In the Crosshairs of Assassins. We won’t say more because part of the fun is discovering for yourself the references that this game makes.

Deathwish Enforcers critical review analysis opinion Sunset Riders

It’s too bad the rest of Deathwish Enforcers’ parody humor is so bad.. It’s the kind of game that puts a 69 on the screen or shows a spaceship shaped like a male penis and thinks it’s the funniest thing in the universe. They can also see some female nudes and birds that attack defecating on the protagonists.

Easy Riders

Deathwish Enforcers Game Pays Homage To Sunset Riders In An Almost Shameless Way. The introduction video, the animations of the characters, the way they shoot, the structure of the levels and even the bosses themselves are copied from the Konami game. In the first level there is even a section in which we have to race over a group of bikers in the same way as we did in the arcade classic. The levels on horseback from the original title are now on a motorcycle and use the same ideas.

In essence, it’s a way to enjoy Sunset Riders again (or for the first time), but with a fresh coat of paint that replaces the cowboys from the ’60s and ’70s movies with cops from the same era. This is not a bad idea. Sometimes we want to live an experience that we like with enough differences to make it feel new. But there are two problems in this case.

Deathwish Enforcers critical review analysis opinion Sunset RidersDeathwish Enforcers critical review analysis opinion Sunset RidersDeathwish Enforcers critical review analysis opinion Sunset RidersDeathwish Enforcers critical review analysis opinion Sunset Riders

The pixel art is pretty good, but the level design—while not bad—pales in comparison to the gameplay it mimics, and there were times when we found ourselves in a bind not because of a lack of skill, but because the action wasn’t easy to understand. . Nor can we ignore the ‘bugs’. We found sections with graphical errors that obscure the action and sometimes the entire screen. The developers promised a solution for the most serious problems, but at the time of writing the review it had not yet arrived.

The other problem is that for an independent game that imitates the arcade style —which means that it can be played in less than an hour, although part of its fun is playing multiple times trying to improve the score— has a relatively high price. We can get it for $22.99 dollars (more than 100,000 Colombian pesos) on Nintendo Switch, PS4 and PS5 despite the fact that the emulated version of Sunset Riders for those same platforms costs only $7.99 (around 36,000 pesos).).

HEAVY MACHINE GUN

But Sunset Riders is not the only playable inspiration behind Deathwish Enforcers, as it is also It has some elements based on the Metal Slug saga. Not only do we have to do a few rescues as we go through the levels—although it involves sexy girls instead of bearded POWs—but there are sections straight out of SNK games. Without going any further, the confrontation with the final boss is directly reminiscent of the last enemy of Metal Slug 3.

Deathwish Enforcers critical review analysis opinion Sunset Riders

We also have zombies. Why are there zombies in a police game? It’s not just because there are in Metal Slug but because the sixties B-series movies that pitted their rude detectives against demons and satanic cults were not so rare. Also because this game winks at films like The Shining and Evil Dead.

Is Deathwish Enforcers a good game?

Honestly, it’s a bit mediocre. But that doesn’t necessarily mean you can’t enjoy it. We had a lot of laughs during several games in the cooperative mode that allows up to four players locally. It’s a good choice if you’re looking for unpretentious retro-style 2D action with plenty of movie references.

Despite that, we still prefer Sunset Riders.

Deathwish Enforcers In Summary

We quite enjoyed our Deathwish Enforcers games thanks to its local multiplayer mode and references to classic TV and crime movies. It is simple action in the retro style and that can offer many hours of fun, especially without trying to play to improve our score. But we cannot say that this is a great game. Its humor is grotesque, its gameplay is nothing special —it’s an almost exact copy of Sunset Riders— and we found very serious ‘bugs’ that weren’t fixed during its first week on the market. If you enjoy arcade games like this and want something that reminds you of Konami’s cowboy game, it’s worth a look, but we recommend waiting for a drop in price.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor – Review

Since his appearance in the 2019 game Jedi: Fallen Order, Cal Kestis and his companions from the Mantis ship became one of the most beloved characters by fans of Star Wars. We couldn’t wait to see you on a new adventure. That wish came true much sooner than expected. Less than four years later —a great record considering the development times of this type of video game— Star Wars Jedi: Survivor came into our hands and in this review we will discover if it lives up to expectations.

Being an exclusive title for PC and current generation consoles, many expected a huge technical leap from its predecessor. In many ways it is, but it can also be disappointing in terms of performance. The new story is not bad at all and offers many epic and emotional moments, but we also felt that it had much more potential.

This story begins several years after the events of the first game. The crew of the Mantis ship have scattered across the galaxy following their own goals. Cal and BD-1 now work with Saw Gerrera in his fight against the Empire. But the young Jedi is frustrated with the few results they are achieving. While visiting his friend Greez in Koboh, Cal accidentally learns old secrets from the High Republic era and finally feels that he can make a difference. But in pursuing that dream, he risks losing himself to the Dark Side.

A galaxy full of nice faces

The greatest strength that Star Wars Jedi: Survivor has is in its wonderful characters. Cal, BD-1, Cere, Greez and Merrin are just as charismatic as they were in Fallen Order. Now that they have followed their own dreams and know more about the galaxy, they are more interesting.

Of course, the biggest spotlight is on Cal. His obsession with reuniting his family, confronting the Empire, and his doubts about the future follow a well-known path in this kind of narrative. Fortunately, his personality and the relationship he has with his friends make him stand out positively.

There are also new faces that are quite nice. Ancient droid Zee, dramatic fisherman Skoova, scheming bounty hunter Caij Vanda, and clumsy Turgle—who plays the less irritating Jar Jar Binks—won our hearts. Some of them are tied to optional activities like gardening, collecting songs, collecting rewards, or playing on the holoboard.

It is a pity that more important characters for the plot are not so interesting. Cal’s new partner, Bode Akuna, only becomes relevant towards the end of the story. There is also a new villain that is a bit disappointing.

From the High Republic with love

It was a great success to tie the history of the video game with the era of the High Republic, which existed 200 years before the events of the films. This allows a wider audience to become familiar with a narrative space that has been explored almost exclusively in novels and comics. It’s a real treat for fans to get a look at the temples, uniforms, and characters from that era.

Dagan Gera was a character with a lot of potential. He is a High Republic Jedi who has been drawn to the Dark Side and awakens in a world very different from the one he left behind. It’s too bad he’s ultimately just a generic villain with boring motivations. One big positive about him is that he has a disability and that doesn’t stop him from being a challenge when we face him..

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor critical review analysis opinion game

Fortunately, Dagan Gera’s obsession does work well on a thematic level. Like many other recent video games, the story of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is primarily about dueling. It not only refers to the pain we feel when we lose someone we love, but when we fail in a purpose or discover that something we always wanted is unattainable.. There are several characters who are carried away by rage and fear when that happens and that moves them to the Dark Side.

This game has a great thematic coherence, but despite that its plot is somewhat weak. The motivations of some key characters feel a bit forced and their reactions to some events don’t fit with the gravity of the situation. There are two cameos by popular Star Wars characters—one in-story and one at the end of an optional mission—that are nothing more than ‘fanservice’.

If the game’s story works, it’s thanks to the strength of its characters and its themes, not the plot itself. His development is not very good.

Elegant skills for a more civilized age

In this review we also want to emphasize the other great strength of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, its combat and movement systems. Controlling Cal Kestis is even more fun than in the previous game thanks to new combat stances, customization options, and starting the adventure with skills we learned in Fallen Order like double jumping and wall running..

The settings are designed to make the most of Cal’s abilities. Koboh and Jedah —which are semi-open worlds— are full of details and secrets that encourage us to explore every corner. The map does a fantastic job of letting us know which routes we can follow and which ones are blocked until we unlock a new ability.. The rewards are also a great incentive for exploration. Say goodbye to the ugly ponchos from the previous game. Here we have all kinds of new outfits, hairstyles, beard styles for Cal, colors and skins for BD-1. The different parts for the Lightsaber also return, but this time they are much more colorful.

We can also find improvements to health and Strength, as well as advantages with which we can make a ‘build’ according to our style of play. Some of these are found in High Republic chambers, puzzle sections that somewhat reminded us of the sanctuaries in Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

Other locations we visit—such as Coruscant, Nova Garon, and the destroyed moon of Koboh—are more linear settings that put our platforming skills to the test. Despite the different biomes in Koboh—deserts, swamps, mountains, and abandoned bases— we miss more variety of worlds. Jedah, for example, is nothing more than a vast desert with some ruins that are too similar to each other. In general, there are many sections that do not serve to develop the plot or explore new playable possibilities, so they feel like filler.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor critical review analysis opinion game

Another issue we have with the gameplay, albeit a minor one, is the inability to switch between all stances at any time. We can only have two equipped and it is not possible to alternate them in the middle of a combo. We understand the reason for this. The developers probably wanted us to focus on just a couple of them and only change them if we lost a fight and wanted to use a more suitable one. It is true that we can overcome any combat with any pose, but we would have preferred a more open system.

The Dark Side of Ray Tracing

In this review we also have to talk about the most negative aspect of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, its lousy performance. We play on PlayStation 5 and there is no doubt that the game looks visually beautiful. Ray tracing is present in both performance and graphics quality modes and makes environments much more attractive, especially when there are bodies of water and reflective surfaces.

Sadly, that makes the game unable to maintain a stable fps (frames of animation per second) rate. In performance mode it is common to see 60 fps cut in half in certain parts of open arenas or when there are a lot of effects on screen. There is also a presence of ‘screen tearing’. Graphics quality mode is a bit more stable, but there are also constant drops below 30 fps.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor critical review analysis opinion game

I wish that was the only glitch in the game, but we found constant ‘bugs’, especially in the collision with geography, and we suffered from complete game crashes. We continued to encounter these issues even a week after its release, when Jedi: Survivor had already received a couple of patches. We also know that the situation for players on PC is not better..

We do not doubt that Respawn Entertainment is working to solve all this. Hopefully things will be much better by the time you read this review.

Is Star Wars: Jedi Survivor a good game?

Have you already looked at the rating we gave you? Despite what many may believe, a rating below 8/10 is not bad. Star Wars Jedi: Survivor has a lot of problems, but none of that stopped us from spending 20+ very exciting and fun hours while preparing this review.. If you liked the first game, are a Star Wars fan, or want a Tomb Raider or Uncharted style title with better platforming, we highly recommend it.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor In Summary

It is true that Star Wars Jedi: Survivor has many performance problems, that its narrative could be better and that it lacks some variety in its settings, but none of this prevented us from spending two dozen hours full of excitement and fun. Its fantastic combat system and level design that take full advantage of Cal Kestis’ abilities make it well worth the effort and some of the drawbacks are easy to ignore. If EA and Respawn manage to solve their technical problems through patches, we will not hesitate to consider it one of the best Star Wars games.

Redfall (Steam) – Review

Two years ago, during the Xbox and Bethesda presentation at E3 2021the first trailer for Redfall, the new game from Arkane Studios —known for titles like Prey, Dishonored and deathloop among others-. Now, Redfall is officially available – on Xbox Series X | S and PC via Steam and Xbox Game Pass – and in our review we will know everything this title has to offer. Will Redfall live up to other Arkane Studios games?

Redfall is Bethesda’s first Xbox-exclusive release since its acquisition in 2020. So this is another reason why everyone has their eyes on Arkane’s game.

Black hole sun won’t you come

Critical review redfall analysis

Redfall tells the story of a world where a small circle of power-hungry people using their deep knowledge of medicine—and the owners of a pharmaceutical company—harness an unfathomable power that turns a large part of Redfall into vampires. Additionally, this group enclosed the inhabitants of Redfall with walls of water and eclipsed the sun. Now, the members of Aevum Pharmaceuticals—known as Gaunt, Bloodthirsty Tom, Civila, and Black Sun—are treated by some as deities and rule different parts of Redfall.

Critical review redfall analysisCritical review redfall analysisCritical review redfall analysisCritical review redfall analysis

In the story of Redfall, the development of the villains stands out more than that of the main characters and the different NPCs of the game. Unfortunately, the heroes have few lines of dialogue and the decision to play one or the other —just like in dead island 2— do not affect the development of Redfall’s story. Fortunately, the advertising campaign that Bethesda has done for Redfall has given us more details about the heroes of the game. We can appreciate this in the previews of the presentation of Devinder ‘Dev’ Crousley, Layla Ellison, remi de la rosa and Jacob Boyer which are on the Bethesda Softworks channel on YouTube.

Critical review redfall analysisThanks to the different notes —which even have unnecessarily “emotional” sermons— Arkane’s vision of the world of Redfall is drawn in our minds.

As in other Arkane games, but to a lesser extent, in Redfall there is a story in every corner that helps to better understand the events that isolated this small town in Massachusetts. Documents, some side missions and other secrets that we found during our exploration will reveal to us how the moments before and after the start of the Redfall vampire apocalypse were experienced from the perspective of each inhabitant.

Neath the black, the sky looks dead

Redfall’s open world is unlike that of games like Skyrim or The Witcher. On the contrary —and closer to what Fallout 76 was at the time— in Redfall we will be alone most of the time. Since among many of the areas there are neither human nor vampire enemies. Another of the problems that we found during our review, Review, of Redfall is that if we explored a place and then it was part of a mission, our progress in the building continues and we only have to activate the objective to continue —in a very anticlimactic way — with the next mission. So our advice is not to waste time exploring and go straight to doing the main quests.

The unique abilities of each Redfall character take advantage of the level design and —although we couldn’t play co-op due to no public matchmaking— We know from several of the game previews —and from the feeling they leave when used— that the different abilities of Redfall’s heroes can be combined to strategize against the hordes of vampires or humans who seek to eliminate us. Also, thanks to the lack of public matchmaking the world of Redfall feels lonely and even “dead” in some parts. Fortunately, as you progress through the game and unlock the second location, the streets and areas that separate us from our objectives are filled with more enemies and make exploration more interesting.

In Redfall there are a decent number of enemies (vampires) and the fight with each of them is very satisfying, since their AI responds better than that of humans.

No one sings like you anymore

The resolution of some missions hides secret rewards if our decision is correct or ethically incorrect.

Another of the inexplicable decisions in the Redfall multiplayer section is that the progress of the missions only counts for the host of the room. Which condemns their companions to have to help and waste the time invested or the host to have to redo the mission to accompany the person who supported him. Without a doubt, Redfall doesn’t feel as immersive as other Arkane works, since the title is clearly focused on cooperative play and wild action. However, things like exploring buildings —such as New England mansions— that have a great level of detail even in the documents that one finds, suggest that in Redfall there is still that something that has made the studio so dear. from Texas.

Redfall on Xbox Game Pass for PC has a weight of 103.29 GB and on Steam 78.37.

On a technical level, the world of Redfall does not have loads, but this could have led to a series of failures in the game. During the time we tested Redfall for this review, the game ran on our PC—a Ryzen 3700x, 16GB of RAM, and a Radeon 5700—at an average of 60 FPS with FSR 2.1 enabled. However, in some areas of the game the performance dropped significantly. Other errors that we could find were failures in the animations of some enemies and an artificial intelligence of these a bit inconsistent – at times sharp and deadly and at others non-existent.

Redfall In Summary

RedFall has a gameplay that, although it doesn’t invent the wheel, makes the experience of facing vampires fun. Exploring haunted houses or going up to the rooftops to look for a favorable point fulfill the fun of the player. However, the rhythm of the story together with the errors and deficiencies of the cooperative manage to overshadow Arkane’s work. However, the game is on Xbox Game Pass and with the experience of other Microsoft titles such as Sea of Thieves, it is not unreasonable to say that in a few months we are talking about a game that is not different, but better.

Dead Island 2 – Review

9 years ago, during E3 2014, we had the opportunity to witness the first trailer for Dead Island 2 during the PlayStation conference. Since then, the Deep Silver game suffered from various delays and changes in your development team. However, as the years passed, the news about the development of Dead Island 2 was increasingly scarce. This changed 4 years ago, when in a THQ Nordic financial report the company listed Dead Island 2 among his projects to be released in the following years. The moment arrived and on April 28 Deep Silver launched Dead Island 2 —for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC via EGS— developed by Dambuster Studios and in our review, or Review, We will tell you about our experience killing zombies in Los Angeles and San Francisco.

Index: Dead Island 2 – Review

Welcome to “Hell-A”

With zero pretensions —and plenty of references to zombie movies— we are presented with the story of Dead Island 2. It places us during a zombie apocalypse that breaks out in the city of Los Angeles when a group of survivors tries to escape from the chaos on a plane As expected things go wrong and the ship crashes. We will have to choose between one of six of these survivors or “zombie killers” to start our adventure. Each of Dead Island 2’s zombie slayers has its own stats, history, and special abilities. However, the zombie slayer that we choose does not change the development of the story of Dead Island 2 at all.

The premise of the game’s story may be outdated, but the humor with which it tackles some everyday things makes the occasional laugh.

Our character is immune and our mere existence is a hope for humanity. With this in mind we must find a way to escape from the city together with the other survivors that we find on our way. Dead Island 2’s story is something that still works, but even in 2016 it would have felt worn down. However, the secondary characters and the situations that surround their arcs keep the story of Deep Silver and Dambuster Studios fresh.

Simple and fun combat that fits every type of player

The slideshow requires JavaScript.

Our zombie killer, in addition to having unique lines in the history of Dead Island 2, has some peculiarities. Once we know each of them we can choose the one that best suits our style of play.

Bruno is similar to Amy, but not as fast. However, of the six characters, he is the one that generates the most critical damage. Amy is the fastest zombie slayer of the group, but also the least resistant. She can throw weapons with force and has a bonus when attacking from behind. Carla is strong and can absorb elemental damage. Additionally, she has a unique ability that allows her to deal with large groups of zombies. Dani is tough and her abilities are health regeneration by consecutively killing zombies and creating explosions with heavy attacks. Jacob has the most level statistics of the group and his special ability allows him to increase the damage of his attacks as he eliminates zombies. Ryan is basically the tank of the team, since he can absorb large amounts of damage and is very slow. His special ability allows him to recover health for each zombie he kills.

Dodge, finish off, spin around and repeat

Weapons—such as pistols, shotguns, or rifles—can also be modified to deal elemental damage.

Leaving aside the unstable rhythm of the story of Dead Island 2, let’s talk about its gameplay, which is what we will be most busy with during the more than 20 hours that the game can last just doing main missions. In this first-person game, the main fighting mechanic is —far from being firearms— melee combat. This is not to say that there are no pistols or shotguns. However, dodging at just the right time—to be rewarded with a counterattack—or blocking a zombie’s lunges are what define our survival when attacked by groups of walkers. At our disposal we also have baits, flying kicks and even ninja shuriken.

Fury mode is perfect for fighting a large number of enemies.

We can find throughout the different interconnected areas of the world of Dead Island 2 a large number of weapons, among which are wrenches, rakes, baseball bats, mitts, machetes and katanas among others. These weapons have a specific duration and can be modified —at different crafting tables throughout the game— to increase their attack power, speed, or deal elemental damage. For example, modified weapons can electrocute an enemy and at the same time recover our health, there are many ways to get different combos in Dead Island 2. In order to make these modifications, we will have to collect all the resources that we find on our way — a tedious but very satisfying mission when we put together the weapon that gives us the effect we are looking for.

In Dead Island 2, the environment is useful and very beautiful

In a world full of zombies, the best film awards had to be called that.

Elemental damage in Dead Island 2 is not only present in weapons, since there are also zombies that will attack us while they are electrified, burning or even holding gallons of corrosive chemicals. This can be mixed in our favor with puddles of oil, chemicals, water or loose cables or gas tanks found in the game environment. Thanks to this, the combat in Dead Island 2 has depth and even some strategy. However, the addictive combat system of Dead Island 2 is overshadowed by the repetitive tasks that we will have to do to complete the missions. Everything in Dead Island 2 is limited to getting a fuse, battery or looking to examine an objective to activate a dialogue line and continue with the mission. This in a long game day becomes repetitive and heavy.

The deck of ability cards will complement the power of our weapons. A gallon of water is ideal for putting out a fire.

As for the graphics, Dead Island 2 stands out for the detail of the buildings and the explorable areas. This time, the game went from being an open world to being several areas with different buildings to explore. The game both on PC —with a Ryzen 3700x, 16 GB of RAM and a Radeon 5700— and on PlayStation 5 runs at a stable 60 FPS. Another detail to highlight is how the damage of the zombies is shown in the game, since they react to the type of attack they receive in a procedural way and without losing coherence to the attack they receive. The game’s music also stands out for its quality, in which we find both original and licensed music and it fits perfectly into the world that Deep Silver and Dambuster Studios have portrayed in their game.

Dead Island 2 In Summary

Dead Island 2 is a good game that from the start gives us everything it can offer. Hordes of zombies, many weapon combinations and an environment to strategize with our upgraded weapons and abilities. However, after a few hours the experience becomes repetitive, the online game is not stable and the end of the title – as in The Calisto Protocol – is behind the paid DLC that have already been announced. So we can say that Dead Island 2 is a game that is enjoyed only by a few, but that can be annoying if its use is abused.

Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp – Review

As if it were some irony of history, Nintendo’s much-denied to the West Wars franchise was finally released in America one day before the September 11, 2001 attacks on New York. real war is not a game, but the Game Boy Advance game was not to blame either and there are more FPS franchises that have exploited this theme. Japan preferred to postpone the release for three more years and only received it together with its sequel in the Game Boy Wars Advance 1+2 compilation, which has received the ‘remake’ Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp for Nintendo Switch.

Advance Wars Switch review

Game Boy Wars –from Hudson Soft– was the portable version of Famicom Wars, developed by Intelligent Systems, the same as Fire Emblem. In both Japan and the West, Fire Emblem came after Wars. Game Boy Advance had in Advance Wars one of the strongest bases possible in the first months of the portable. The design and gameplay evolved from its predecessors. It made it more attractive, with flawless pixel art and animations for Nintendo’s 32-bit console.

Its two installments do it simply one of the best gameboy advance games. Nintendo could well have re-released them in their original format for the GBA thanks to the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. Instead, a few years ago WayForward was commissioned to work on some very faithful ‘remakes’ for the hybrid machine. Shantae’s parent company needs no introduction in the platform world. In Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp, we immediately noticed some pretty similar 2D character animations to those in River City Girls.

Advance Wars Switch reviewFor our review of Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp on Switch we got immediate access to the sequel Black Hole Rising.

These, however, stray from the battlefield graphics, which are 3D instead. This main difference from the original games leaves a mixed result. The detailed pixels have an innate charm that makes them immortal exponents. Franchises like Pokémon have shown that 2D art has great strengths even if 3D ends up replacing it. Despite the fact that a bit of the GBA personality goes away with the jump to 3D of the combats, the gameplay of Advance Wars remains intact and adds the modernized character designs.

Meanwhile, on Switch the teaching times have fortunately been reduced. The original game put players through a series of tutorials and 14 training battles to explain the basic mechanics. Every Advance Wars unit, building and special commander powers requires its necessary explanation for new players. Advanced warfare veterans wouldn’t want to repeat such concepts, so everyone gets a cursory refresher and the option to dig deeper into the remaining elements.

Once the new 3D combat animations are assimilated, quality of life improvements are deployed in Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp. The clean illustrations of characters like Nell, Andy, Max, Sami and the rival commanders, are accompanied by a few voices in the dialogues. The iconic musical themes of each protagonist and commander are new versions. In the battle maps we find additions such as the approach of them with the right ‘stick’. While the rotation is still not possible.

Advance Wars Switch reviewNeotanks are another advanced level.

While animations could also be turned off on the Game Boy Advance, Advance Wars loses a lot of its charm without them. On Switch, we can leave them but speed up our own and opponent’s turns by holding ZR down, a practical solution. The game saves automatically and if we exit a campaign map we can resume it later. For its part, the classic difficulty has been the standard and unique to GBA, while players can choose a more relaxed one and switch between the two whenever they want.

Advance Wars and Advance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising on Switch make it easy for players to crossed by Cosmo Land and Macro Land. Now, this is not to say that they are a walk in the park of Wars World. The early battles of the campaign do not pose much of a threat to the Orange Star army. As you advance through the nations of Blue Moon, Green Earth, and Gold Comet (formerly called Yellow Comet), commanders and their units reveal more aggressive strategies and not less bellicose.

Advance Wars Switch reviewIn our review of Advance Wars for Switch we loved the new character art.

Powers that boost ranged attacks, nullify half the damage taken or allow a second move, work very hard against when the opponents control air and naval units. The fog of war that hides the visibility of the terrain is another essential part of a lethal mix. Of course, it is not possible to manually save the game at a combat point to restart the game and try another strategy on the same map.

In dead-end cases with many losses, starting a mission over is the only solution. When we access the bases and we must take care of the budget, capture more cities and build units, it is mandatory to think with a cool head. Some maps can be thematic, which they use, to say the least, planes and by default the counterattack is with anti-aircraft units. For their part, other larger maps suffocate due to the number and variety of infantry, artillery, tanks, missile launchers, rocket launchers, bombers, submarines, and others.

While capturing enemy headquarters or eliminating all units are the main victory conditions, not on all maps this is lightly achievable. Knowledge is power, so trial and defeat may be the only strategy to unleash them all. Similar to the GBA, there is a wide variety of maps available for multiplayer against the CPU or other players.. It is possible to play up to four on the same console or locally each one with his own, also the same as in GBA.

Advance Wars Switch reviewA Link to the War

As for the online multiplayer, it is frustrating that it is not used outside the friends list. Only with users on the friends list on Switch who own the game is it possible to compete 1v1 and trade designed maps. Otherwise, there’s no way to share your designs on a server with the rest of the globe, a la Super Mario Maker 2. There’s also no way to battle against three other players via a lobby on Nintendo Switch Online. So the company’s service somewhat loses its meaning in terms of online gaming.

As a point in favor, we can immediately access the Black Hole Rising campaign without having to finish the first Advance Wars. The second game is identical in mechanics aside from the introduction of Neotanks and new commanders. Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp is a fair 2×1 that doesn’t care about altering the traditional formula but embellishing it. It is as addictive to play as ever and we hope – more than a ‘remake’ of Dual Strike and Days of Ruin – a completely new edition as a successor on Switch.

Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp In Summary

Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp didn’t need to change everything that makes great games to the award-winning GBA versions. But it does maximize your native potential. Beneath its lively cape and vibrant artwork, WayForward continues to exist as an addictive and no less challenging tactical strategy game. Sometimes its difficulty can spike and requires players to go over the plan like good commanders. Animations, voices, music, all those seemingly superficial improvements are on Switch as a dessert for a main course that does not disappoint in general terms despite the absence of Intelligent Systems.

Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores (DLC) – Review

It’s a real shame PS4 players can’t enjoy this expansion because it has some of the most impressive moments we’ve enjoyed in the Aloy saga. I loved Horizon Forbidden West even though I didn’t like it as much as its predecessor, so I’m happy to tell you in this review that the Burning Shores DLC fixes several of that title’s flaws.

This adventure begins right after the end of Forbidden West. In fact, it is not possible to visit the new region if we do not first defeat the final boss of the base game. Once this is done, Sylens meets us at Tilda’s old mansion to give us very bad news. One of the Zenith is still alive and is planning something in the region known as “the burning shores.”

At first glance, the fiery shores can be a bit disappointing. They are an archipelago that visually reminds too much of the Isla de las Agujas (San Francisco). Lava flows and landmarks like the Chinese Theater and the iconic Hollywood sign give it a bit of character, but it still feels very familiar. It’s also somewhat annoying that we can’t immediately explore the entire map using the flying mounts, but at least this is justified in the plot.

Aloy’s goal in this place is to find another of the Zenith: a man named Walter Londra who a thousand years ago was an aerospace magnate. Arriving there he discovers part of the Quen fleet that split off from the one he found in San Francisco. One of them is a sailor named Seyka, who will accompany us during almost the entire adventure.

A quieter and… romantic Aloy?

In the Burning Shores DLC they fixed two of the main criticisms I had against Horizon Forbidden West in my base game review. I didn’t find ‘bugs’ that affected the gameplay and Aloy doesn’t talk so much anymore.

Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores DLC critical review analysis opinionHorizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores DLC critical review analysis opinion

If you remember correctly, Aloy was not silent. He loved to comment at all times about what he saw, where we should go and even tell us the solution to the riddles. He still does some of this, but much less frequently. He only gives us clues about the puzzles if we are really taking too long to solve them. That helps make Aloy that much more likable, as you’ll agree that she was a bit of a nuisance in Forbidden West..

It is important that Aloy is more charismatic due to her unusual development in this adventure. Her story arc doesn’t progress much, but her story focuses almost exclusively on her relationship with Seyka. She’s basically Aloy’s equal: a highly skilled warrior who doesn’t have the love or support of her tribe, so she has to do everything herself and ends up a hero. As the story progresses we see how they go from respect to admiration, trust and finally something else.

Oh yeah. on burning shore we finally have the option to pursue a romance for Aloy. Don’t expect Bioware-style dialogue trees and loyalty quests, as everything is limited to a single decision at the end of the DLC. But it is very nice to see a side of the protagonist that had been hidden from us for so long.

An “elonmuskian” villain

On the opposite side of this story we have Walter Londra, the villain of Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores. In our review of the base game, we felt that the Zenith had a lot of storytelling potential, but it’s sorely wasted. Londra is much better implemented in the plot. Although he is still a fairly two-dimensional character, he represents the excesses of capitalism much better.. He presents himself to a group of Quen as a god and creates a cult of himself. He fills the heads of his followers with his lies as he dehumanizes them and turns them into free labor.

Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores DLC critical review analysis opinion

I’ve already seen articles popping up online comparing Walter Londra to Elon Musk. In fact, it’s fashionable to compare any asshole billionaire in any story to the owner of Tesla and Twitter. But the truth is that this character is not directly inspired by him, but by the culture that has allowed the rich to believe they have authority to do whatever they want. Londra is a man who needs constant admiration and homage, which is why he is making sure to create a world where that is never lacking.

This villain also allows us to enjoy one of the most impressive fights against a final boss that we have seen in recent video games. It’s a shame that the promotional material for the DLC has already more or less revealed what it’s about, because it would have been amazing to take this mechanical devil by surprise. It’s a real spectacle with so many stages that it would make the final boss of a JRPG envy.. He agrees with the developers who explained Why wouldn’t this game show off its full potential if it came out for PS4?.

Speaking of that, I take this opportunity to remind you that Here’s how to copy your Horizon Forbidden West game from PS4 to PS5 via USB. So you can enjoy the Burning Shores DLC on the new console without having to finish the game again.

Aloy has new tricks up her sleeve

Horizon Forbidden West already had a wealth of mechanics, combat options, and exploration, but the DLC adds even more. We already met the Hydrofoil, a version of the Alasol that, in addition to flying, allows us to dive and move at high speed underwater. We also have a new way to attack stunned enemies, a powerful Zenith weapon that can upgrade to become a railgun, and a skiff for sailing.

Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores DLC critical review analysis opinion

All these novelties are interesting and fun, but they are somewhat wasted. Some of them are unlocked near the end of the DLC or even in its post-game and there are no more scenarios that allow them to be exploited. Still, they are welcome.

We also have a new frog-inspired machine that lays “eggs” from which other machines hatch. It’s a lot of fun fighting her. There are new collectibles and activities like dinosaur figures, the search for hidden treasure and flight pathswhich offer nice rewards.

waiting for nemesis

The main story of Horizon Forbidden West’s Burning Shores DLC can be finished in around eight hours, but doing this review I found that everything this new setting offers can entertain us for 14 hours or more.. It’s an excellent addition to Aloy’s world that doesn’t necessarily advance the main story, but it does allow us to see an unknown side of the protagonist and have fun alongside her.

Guerrilla Games has already announced that the saga will continue with a third game. It was obvious that this was going to happen. Surely a new title will be many years away, but in the meantime we have downloadable content like this to be with Aloy and the machines for at least one more weekend.

Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores In Summary

As good as the base game Horizon Forbidden West is, the flaws of its story and traditional open world left me with a bad taste in my mouth, but the Burning Shore DLC reminded me why I love Aloy and her world. The new mechanics are very nice, this more compact open world is fun to explore and I loved that they showed the softer side of the protagonist. The story isn’t great and Walter Londra is nothing more than the typical capitalist villain, but it ends in a battle against a final boss that has a very high level of spectacularity. Hopefully the wait for Horizon 3 won’t be too long.

Bayonetta Origins: Cherry and the Lost Demon – Review

Bayonetta is currently a widely recognized PlatinumGames property, of which as a franchise we have very little. His graceful rescue by Nintendo allowed him to distribute a second and even a third title. Bayonetta 3 was one of the most anticipated games for Switch and although he tries, the limits of the console compromise him. We never suspected that they had a surprise for the witch from Umbra a few months after the last installment of her (where she is hidden in the form of a short demo). But this time focused on Cereza and the origin of Bayonetta.

Thankfully, the Bayonetta saga takes a breather from the wacky multiversal combat to offer a simpler story. We say fortunately, because Bayonetta Origins: Cherry and the Lost Demon doesn’t have the same ambitions as the first three games. Having a teenage Bayonetta as the protagonist allows you to play with the aesthetics and the development of her mechanics. The most important thing to keep in mind is that Cereza is not Bayonetta yet.. That is, not the adult and brash Bayonetta that we all know.

Bayonetta Origins Cherry review

A fairytale

In Bayonetta Origins, Cereza is the young daughter of an Umbra witch and a Lumen sage, exiled by her kind and in the care of the hermit witch Morgana. This powerful witch lives next to the forbidden forest of Avalon and trains Cherry in the arts of Umbra. Although Morgana is strict and sees enormous potential in Cereza, the little girl only wants the power necessary to rescue her captive mother Rosa from her. She makes a stuffed animal as a gift for Cherry, which she names Cheshire and clings to for comfort.

Guided by the figure of a mysterious boy in her dreams and nightmares, Cereza enters the Avalon forest, ruled by evil fairies. When she is chased by a group of them, through her inexperience she tries to summon a demon and it takes possession of the Cheshire stuffed animal. Cherry doesn’t know how to fight, so she depends on the lost demon to survive in the Avalon forest. The game narrates the story as if it were a fairy tale in digital book format. Likewise, its nice artistic touch of watercolors and paint gives it an original visual break from the main Bayonetta games.

Bayonetta Origins Cherry reviewIn our review of Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon we highlight the power of the four elements of the Avalon forest.

Like all classic tales, it enjoys a mandatory linearity to unfold the story. Just because it’s a fairy tale, however, doesn’t necessarily mean it’s for children. Bayonetta Origins is a dark fantasy that readapts the bases on the witches of Umbra but makes it sufficiently accessible to all audiences. While traditional Bayonetta games require skill with control and use of combos, in Cherry’s shoes we take a slower pace and leave the fighting to Cheshire with the double use of ‘sticks’.

how to train your demon

In the same way that Bayonetta 3 allows temporary control of hellish demons within the battlefield and the execution of combos, Bayonetta Origins puts all the weight on Cheshire. At first the unconventional relationship between Cherry and Cheshire causes problems. Cereza is no longer a shy girl, but she is rebellious, brave and determined to face adversity. Cheshire is a demon, and as such Cherry cannot treat him as a pet. Morgana well warns her that they are only tools for the witches of Umbra.

Still, they depend on each other to get out of the Avalon forest. Cherry to achieve her long-awaited power and Cheshire to get her freedom from the fledgling girl. We could walk alone with Cherry carrying Cheshire’s stuffed animal but we wouldn’t get very far. For this reason, we must control Cheshire with the right ‘stick’ while we move Cherry with the left ‘stick’. Sometimes it feels like a title designed for two players in a cooperative format and in fact we would have loved that option. During the exploration sections there is not much inconvenience and the environment puzzles are more of a light difficulty.

Bayonetta Origins Cherry reviewSometimes we will have to return with new abilities to previously visited places.

In battles, on the other hand, we tend to focus on attacking with Cheshire (ZR) and with Cherry the main thing we can do is imprison enemies with Witch Pulse (ZL). Later on, a skill tree for each one allows you to expand the options for combos, magic recovery, slowdown, attack power and more. In the case of Cheshire it is more striking, since in the Avalon forest we have to collect four elemental nuclei with the powers of wood, stone, water and fire.

cooperative exploration

As Cherry is not Bayonetta yet, the one who shines is Cheshire with the transformations and powers of these four elements. It doesn’t take long for them to learn to trust each other despite Morgana’s advice. Without being her adult version, Cereza keeps that irreverent spark of her counterpart and a refined voice acting by Angeli Wall, reprising her role from Bayonetta 3.. She is a teenager according to her character and it’s nice that she respected herself.

Single-player puzzle-solving and cooperative exploration games are not new. Some decide to downplay the secondary character’s playable importance or make him part of annoying ‘escort missions’. Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon gives Cereza and Cheshire equal value on the exploratory world map, since we require both equally. Only Cherry can use stairs, boost with Cheshire as a spring, or cross sectors that demons can’t. But Cheshire can jump slopes and knock down natural obstacles, both complement each other.

Bayonetta Origins Cherry reviewCherry in Bayonetta Origins is a self-sufficient young lady, but Cheshire is indispensable, as we say in our review.

Sometimes a certain parallelism with games like The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks is inevitable. We know the comparison to a Zelda game can be lazy because it’s an action/adventure mainstay with ambient puzzles. Cheshire acting as Zelda’s spirit in Phantom armor and Cherry as Link makes a lot of sense. Said that, even Bayonetta Origins features space-time “mini dungeons” with mid-level enemies and bosseswith crystal rewards for skill trees or increased health.

While graphically placid, Bayonetta Origins’ Avalon Forest has an overall design with vague representational elements. When the map expands it is easy to confuse the roads, due to the few signs that exist between the sectors that compose it. Various layers and foreground vegetation give the impression that this would have been a perfect title for the Nintendo 3DS stereoscopic 3D. It has all the elements to be the portable version of Bayonetta that we didn’t think we needed but knows how to become independent from its older sisters..

Bayonetta Origins: Cherry and the Lost Demon In Summary

Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon has the luxury of experimenting with the franchise as the work of a group of young developers at PlatinumGames. An action-adventure game where the inexperienced Cherry is as charismatic as Bayonetta and her forceful partner Cheshire a mighty beast of war. Moving away from the flashy combos of the Bayonetta series, we instead get an illustrated fairy forest with lights and colors in all its magical corners. A much more accessible entry point into the Umbra witch franchise and perhaps the mainstay of whatever potential spin-off games are. Simple puzzles, inquisitive exploration, and engaging storytelling.
