It is at this point where Humanity shines, in the creativity that the player has to achieve the objectives. But how do we guide humans in Humanity? In order for humanity to ascend, we will give them orders that our dog will leave on the ground. These can be arrows that indicate where to go, various types of jumps, arrows that divide the flow of people in two directions, the ability for humans to float and we can even arm our people among other actions that we will learn about throughout the game. game.

In Humanity, players must solve the puzzles with some limitations.

Additionally, the last test of each Humanity level will ask us for a certain number of rescued “Goldys” in order to unlock it. The tests of the story mode in Humanity have different peculiarities. In some of these, players will not have all the orders available or will have a limited number of uses for the ones they have. This premise is straightforward and works to keep players engaged in the events of Farren and Boji’s adventure through to its conclusion. The game is fully subtitled in Spanish and has a highly polished sound and dubbing section.

Unfortunately, the variety of enemies —and Farren’s movements— is quite limited. Thanks to this, when we’re not facing a boss, the fights become repetitive and monotonous. Added to this, the game has several performance problems and ‘stuttering’, which makes the reaction to the enemy’s blows fail —especially when we face several enemies at the same time.

An interesting artistic proposal, but soulless

Stray Blade has a decent musical section, which stands out in boss battles. Additionally, the game’s art direction is eye-catching —despite the lifelessness of its world— and its graphics resemble those seen in games like darksiders either dauntless. We have previously discussed some stuttering issues during combat, as this also occurs in some of the non-fighting areas of the game. During the time we took to review Stray Blade, we experienced a couple of ‘bugs’. Although these were not so aggressive as to interrupt our session, they did manage to surprise us. Since, the game —despite being exclusive for the current generation of consoles and PC— does not stand out for having polished graphics.

Stray Blade is a game with a fun and simple combat system that is balanced with the large amount of year that the enemies do. Its settings have a nice artistic direction, but they are wasted. Since, despite having large areas, the rewards are not and the repetitiveness of their combats force us to go directly for the main objective so as not to fall into boredom. If you’re a fan of the genre, you’ll manage to get hooked on Stray Blade, if you can’t weigh it twice. The sixties and seventies were golden decades for police movies and series. To these eras we owe pop culture staples like Mission Impossible, The French Connection, Bullitt, The Avengers, and many more. The influence of Dirty Harry and The Anonymous Avenger is still felt today in film, television and video games. That is why despite the time that has passed since they arrived in the world, there are still tributes and parodies like Deathwish Enforcers, the indie game that we will talk about in this review.

Its characters and concept may be inspired by the world of cinema and television, but the gameplay is directly taken from an arcade classic that we remember very fondly: Sunset Riders. This makes sense because that great Konami game was directly based on the ‘spaghetti westerns’ of the sixties and this new title does exactly the same with another popular genre during the same era.

Did you see that trailer? The developers want to make the inspiration of ‘grindhouse cinema’ very clear. This 2D jumping and shooting game takes nothing seriously and because of that it can make all kinds of references – even if they don’t seem to fit the theme – and bad jokes. That works in your favor on several occasions, but also against you.

The best policemen and vigilantes in the world

Moviegoers won’t be able to hold back a smile when they see the character selection screen. Larry Hardwood, Chuck Bronxman, Diana Bang and Cleopatra Love are clear allusions to Harry Callahan (Clint Eastwood in Dirty Harry), Paul Kersey (Charles Bronson in The Anonymous Avenger), Emma Peel (Diana Rigg in The Avengers) and Cleopatra Love ( Pam Grier in Foxy Brown and Coffy).

They are not the only references to pop culture icons of the last century. The bosses are clear parodies of the porn actor Ron Jeremy and characters from movies like A Clockwork Orange, Diabolik and In the Crosshairs of Assassins. We won’t say more because part of the fun is discovering for yourself the references that this game makes.

It’s too bad the rest of Deathwish Enforcers’ parody humor is so bad.. It’s the kind of game that puts a 69 on the screen or shows a spaceship shaped like a male penis and thinks it’s the funniest thing in the universe. They can also see some female nudes and birds that attack defecating on the protagonists.

This is not a bad idea. Sometimes we want to live an experience that we like with enough differences to make it feel new. But there are two problems in this case.

The pixel art is pretty good, but the level design—while not bad—pales in comparison to the gameplay it mimics, and there were times when we found ourselves in a bind not because of a lack of skill, but because the action wasn’t easy to understand. . Nor can we ignore the ‘bugs’. We found sections with graphical errors that obscure the action and sometimes the entire screen. The developers promised a solution for the most serious problems, but at the time of writing the review it had not yet arrived.

The other problem is that for an independent game that imitates the arcade style —which means that it can be played in less than an hour, although part of its fun is playing multiple times trying to improve the score— has a relatively high price. We can get it for $22.99 dollars (more than 100,000 Colombian pesos) on Nintendo Switch, PS4 and PS5 despite the fact that the emulated version of Sunset Riders for those same platforms costs only $7.99 (around 36,000 pesos).).

But Sunset Riders is not the only playable inspiration behind Deathwish Enforcers, as it is also It has some elements based on the Metal Slug saga. Without going any further, the confrontation with the final boss is directly reminiscent of the last enemy of Metal Slug 3.

Is Deathwish Enforcers a good game?

Honestly, it’s a bit mediocre. But that doesn’t necessarily mean you can’t enjoy it. We had a lot of laughs during several games in the cooperative mode that allows up to four players locally. It’s a good choice if you’re looking for unpretentious retro-style 2D action with plenty of movie references.

Despite that, we still prefer Sunset Riders.

We quite enjoyed our Deathwish Enforcers games thanks to its local multiplayer mode and references to classic TV and crime movies. It is simple action in the retro style and that can offer many hours of fun, especially without trying to play to improve our score. But we cannot say that this is a great game. Its humor is grotesque, its gameplay is nothing special —it’s an almost exact copy of Sunset Riders— and we found very serious ‘bugs’ that weren’t fixed during its first week on the market. If you enjoy arcade games like this and want something that reminds you of Konami’s cowboy game, it’s worth a look, but we recommend waiting for a drop in price.

Since his appearance in the 2019 game Jedi: Fallen Order, Cal Kestis and his companions from the Mantis ship became one of the most beloved characters by fans of Star Wars. We couldn’t wait to see you on a new adventure. That wish came true much sooner than expected. Less than four years later —a great record considering the development times of this type of video game— Star Wars Jedi: Survivor came into our hands and in this review we will discover if it lives up to expectations.

Being an exclusive title for PC and current generation consoles, many expected a huge technical leap from its predecessor. In many ways it is, but it can also be disappointing in terms of performance. The new story is not bad at all and offers many epic and emotional moments, but we also felt that it had much more potential.

This story begins several years after the events of the first game. The crew of the Mantis ship have scattered across the galaxy following their own goals. Cal and BD-1 now work with Saw Gerrera in his fight against the Empire. But the young Jedi is frustrated with the few results they are achieving. While visiting his friend Greez in Koboh, Cal accidentally learns old secrets from the High Republic era and finally feels that he can make a difference. But in pursuing that dream, he risks losing himself to the Dark Side.

A galaxy full of nice faces

The greatest strength that Star Wars Jedi: Survivor has is in its wonderful characters. Cal, BD-1, Cere, Greez and Merrin are just as charismatic as they were in Fallen Order. Now that they have followed their own dreams and know more about the galaxy, they are more interesting.

Of course, the biggest spotlight is on Cal. His obsession with reuniting his family, confronting the Empire, and his doubts about the future follow a well-known path in this kind of narrative. Fortunately, his personality and the relationship he has with his friends make him stand out positively.

There are also new faces that are quite nice. Ancient droid Zee, dramatic fisherman Skoova, scheming bounty hunter Caij Vanda, and clumsy Turgle—who plays the less irritating Jar Jar Binks—won our hearts. Some of them are tied to optional activities like gardening, collecting songs, collecting rewards, or playing on the holoboard.

It is a pity that more important characters for the plot are not so interesting. Cal’s new partner, Bode Akuna, only becomes relevant towards the end of the story. There is also a new villain that is a bit disappointing.

Fortunately, Dagan Gera’s obsession does work well on a thematic level. Like many other recent video games, the story of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is primarily about dueling. It not only refers to the pain we feel when we lose someone we love, but when we fail in a purpose or discover that something we always wanted is unattainable.. There are several characters who are carried away by rage and fear when that happens and that moves them to the Dark Side.

This game has a great thematic coherence, but despite that its plot is somewhat weak. The motivations of some key characters feel a bit forced and their reactions to some events don’t fit with the gravity of the situation. There are two cameos by popular Star Wars characters—one in-story and one at the end of an optional mission—that are nothing more than ‘fanservice’.

If the game’s story works, it’s thanks to the strength of its characters and its themes, not the plot itself. His development is not very good.

Elegant skills for a more civilized age

In this review we also want to emphasize the other great strength of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, its combat and movement systems. Controlling Cal Kestis is even more fun than in the previous game thanks to new combat stances, customization options, and starting the adventure with skills we learned in Fallen Order like double jumping and wall running..

The settings are designed to make the most of Cal’s abilities. Koboh and Jedah —which are semi-open worlds— are full of details and secrets that encourage us to explore every corner. The map does a fantastic job of letting us know which routes we can follow and which ones are blocked until we unlock a new ability.. The rewards are also a great incentive for exploration. Say goodbye to the ugly ponchos from the previous game. Here we have all kinds of new outfits, hairstyles, beard styles for Cal, colors and skins for BD-1. The different parts for the Lightsaber also return, but this time they are much more colorful.

We can also find improvements to health and Strength, as well as advantages with which we can make a ‘build’ according to our style of play. Some of these are found in High Republic chambers, puzzle sections that somewhat reminded us of the sanctuaries in Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

Other locations we visit—such as Coruscant, Nova Garon, and the destroyed moon of Koboh—are more linear settings that put our platforming skills to the test. Despite the different biomes in Koboh—deserts, swamps, mountains, and abandoned bases— we miss more variety of worlds. Jedah, for example, is nothing more than a vast desert with some ruins that are too similar to each other. In general, there are many sections that do not serve to develop the plot or explore new playable possibilities, so they feel like filler.

Another issue we have with the gameplay, albeit a minor one, is the inability to switch between all stances at any time. We can only have two equipped and it is not possible to alternate them in the middle of a combo. We understand the reason for this. The developers probably wanted us to focus on just a couple of them and only change them if we lost a fight and wanted to use a more suitable one. It is true that we can overcome any combat with any pose, but we would have preferred a more open system.

The Dark Side of Ray Tracing

In this review we also have to talk about the most negative aspect of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, its lousy performance. We play on PlayStation 5 and there is no doubt that the game looks visually beautiful. Ray tracing is present in both performance and graphics quality modes and makes environments much more attractive, especially when there are bodies of water and reflective surfaces.

Sadly, that makes the game unable to maintain a stable fps (frames of animation per second) rate. In performance mode it is common to see 60 fps cut in half in certain parts of open arenas or when there are a lot of effects on screen. There is also a presence of ‘screen tearing’. Graphics quality mode is a bit more stable, but there are also constant drops below 30 fps.

I wish that was the only glitch in the game, but we found constant ‘bugs’, especially in the collision with geography, and we suffered from complete game crashes. We continued to encounter these issues even a week after its release, when Jedi: Survivor had already received a couple of patches. We also know that the situation for players on PC is not better..

We do not doubt that Respawn Entertainment is working to solve all this. Hopefully things will be much better by the time you read this review.

Is Star Wars: Jedi Survivor a good game?
